The Denver School of Science and Technology will prepare all graduates to continue their education at a four-year college or university. Students and parents are involved in the process of preparing to meet that goal from freshman through senior year. DSST graduation requirements exceed the Colorado Minimum Academic Preparation standards for entrance to four-year schools. In addition to four years of rigorous academic curriculum, the school engages students in the exploration of college options through the advisory College Success curriculum and sponsors required field trips to local campuses.

th Grade: Even before the freshman year begins many incoming 9th grade students attend a summer school program focused on developing academic skills. As 9th and 10th grade Prep Academy students, they are accountable for daily homework in all classes. A daily after-school College Prep session ensures completion of the required work. A twice-weekly study hall supports academic success by addressing issues pertinent to high school adjustment including a unit on Study Skills. Peer and adult tutoring programs also support the development of college readiness skills. The 9th grade curriculum includes physics, reinforcing the development of math skills, as well as required foreign language.

th Grade: Sophomores continue laying the groundwork by developing their skills through academic instruction at or above grade level. 10th graders practice on the Preliminary Test of Scholastic Achievement (PSAT). Representatives of pre-college campus programs recruit regularly at DSST, and we encourage students to participate. Students are also encouraged to take part in leadership and community service activities.

th Grade: All juniors take the PSAT again in October, as well as the Colorado state-mandated ACT in April. They are also required to take an official ACT with Writing in June. Additional college entrance testing, including the SAT Reasoning Test and SAT Subject Tests are scheduled individually. DSST college placement counselors support 11th grade advisors in exploring college options with their students and meet with families to list schools of interest. The school provides information and support on researching college options and scheduling campus visits. The English curriculum includes a unit on “Writing the College Application Essay.”

th Grade: Families continue their research of college options and finalize their list of intended applications. All applications are completed before winter break. Beginning in January, the school supports families in applying for federal student aid and other scholarships. On or before May 1 of the senior year all juniors will have decided where to enroll for post-graduate education.
