The Core Values

by Jenni Adams, senior at DSST

Entering my 4th year at DSST, I can look back on my first day of school, and see how much DSST has influenced my knowledge as well as how I act. Until that day, I never thought that a public high school could care so much about how one acts. Are they responsible? Respectful? Courageous? Curious? Do they have integrity? Do they do their best? As the core values were introduced to me on that first day I wondered; why did this school care? I of course took the passive route and told myself that I wouldn’t care about the core values; they were “worthless” and a “waste of time” in my mind. However, ignoring the core values did more damage than good. Throughout my freshman year I struggled through repetitive disciplinary actions such as silent lunches, mandatory conferences, and a referral. I learned the hard way that its not only ok to accept the core values, but that once you do accept them, they become incorporated into your life, daily actions, and who you are as a person. DSST’s core values are also very standard virtues and values that reflect business policies and values. Being introduced to core values during high school gives students a background knowledge they can use when confronted with the responsibility to uphold core values in the professional world. The core values have become an essential part of DSST curriculum, a part of my life, and the lives of many DSST students. They prepare ourselves for professional standards, and ultimately help us become better people.
